Choosing the right home for your growing family can be complicated. There’s so much to consider, from what to look for in the house itself to the property and surrounding neighbourhood.

Planting your family roots is a necessary process and we want to make sure it goes as smoothly as possible. In this blog, we’ll cover some important features that you should look for while you browse.

 

Find or create a suitable play space for your kids.

One of the first and foremost priorities for a growing family is to find a home with a safe play area for the kids — ideally both indoors and outdoors. 

As for an indoor space, you want your little ones to have an outlet for fun without leaving their toys and other items astray in the living areas of the home. Look for a place with a small multipurpose room and assign it as their indoor play area.

As for an outdoor area, all you really need is a property with ample space for them to run around and play. A fenced-in yard can be a nice feature if you’re also looking for privacy.

 

Find a home with enough storage space.

Look for a home with sufficient storage space. Your kids have got a lot of growing to do, which means you’re going to be storing a lot of keepsakes and personal items over the years as they fly by. If the homes you’re looking at don’t have much storage space, you’ll likely turn to a third-party storage company.

 

Look for any potential safety hazards.

Some homes can have features that may become safety hazards with little ones around, like an open staircase or a high-up deck that could allow them to fall. Learn more about keeping your home as safe as possible for your children.

 

Look for nearby outdoor spaces.

If your house or property is relatively small, try to find a home near larger outdoor spaces like parks, trails, playgrounds or sports fields. Knowing a few good spots like this can be a great way to get some fresh air and burn some energy.

 

Playgrounds and parks are excellent spots for children to play and make new friends. They can also become great places for your kids to hang out when they become more independent. Believe it or not, these spots can also be a great way for you, the parents, to socialize and find new people with similar interests. This is especially the case if you don’t yet know many others in your new neighbourhood.

 

Find a home close to your amenities.

As for an ideal location, you will want to find a home somewhat close to your children’s school. Look around in neighbourhoods with plenty of nearby businesses, restaurants and other amenities that sit within a short walking distance. This is to avoid excessively long commutes and save on gas over time. Neighbourhoods in these areas often have more community events and extracurricular activities to enjoy as their population density is generally higher.
